Maybe You Aren't Over Training, Maybe You Are Under-Recovering

Do you ever find yourself excessively tired after exercise? People often assume that this is the result of overtraining - essentially, too much exercise. While this may be the case, the jury is still out on whether or not "overtraining" is a valid thing. In the meantime, have you considered that you are simply under-recovered?

Yes, recovery is often the missing link for your gains. From weight loss to strength gains and everything in between in the exercise world, you must recover properly from your workouts in order to see benefit from them. Consider that for all the training and volume of work you do, you may be missing out on a few key areas:

1) Sleep. No brainer. Don’t ask me how much you need. It varies person to person. And let’s be honest: you know if you are getting enough sleep or not. Feeling tired? Sleep more.

2) Eating. If you are trying to gain weight, you’ve got to eat. If you aren’t eating enough then you aren’t recovering. On the opposite side of the coin, if you are trying to shed body fat then your training volume needs to be less to match the fact that you eating less calories. Read: Calories = Recovery

3) Relax. Read a book, meditate, go for a light walk, take a nap. Lower your stress and let your body recover. A decrease in physiological stress is an increase in recovery!

Now go train, eat, take a nap, and kick back.
